Equestrian Canada Issues Lifetime Ban to Dayton Gorsline for Misconduct

In a decisive action by the Office of the Sport Integrity Commissioner (OSIC), Dayton Gorsline, a prominent figure in Canadian equestrian sport, has been permanently suspended following an investigation into allegations of sexual misconduct. The suspension, confirmed by Equestrian Canada, reflects the growing enforcement and accountability measures being undertaken as part of Canada’s Safe Sport initiative.

The OSIC investigation concluded that Gorsline committed violations of the Universal Code of Conduct to Prevent and Address Maltreatment in Sport (UCCMS). These violations included sexual misconduct and abuse of power. As a result, Gorsline is permanently ineligible to participate in any Equestrian Canada-sanctioned activities, in any capacity, effective immediately.

The official ruling follows multiple complaints submitted to OSIC, an independent body responsible for administering the Canadian Safe Sport Program. As per OSIC’s statement, the decision was reached through a thorough and fair investigation process that prioritized survivor-centered practices and ensured procedural integrity.

The ruling has sent ripples through the Canadian equestrian community, especially among those familiar with Gorsline’s previous role as Youth Development Program Advisor and his longstanding involvement in elite sport. Many members of the equestrian world have voiced support for the Safe Sport process and for those who came forward with allegations, recognizing the difficulty and courage required to speak out.

Equestrian Canada has issued a statement reaffirming its commitment to a safe and respectful sport environment and encouraging anyone with concerns to utilize the Safe Sport resources available through OSIC.

The Role of OSIC and Safe Sport in Canada

The Office of the Sport Integrity Commissioner plays a pivotal role in safeguarding athlete welfare by overseeing the application of the UCCMS across Canadian sport organizations. As a relatively new but rapidly impactful initiative, the Safe Sport framework aims to address and prevent all forms of abuse, harassment, and maltreatment within sport environments.

Gorsline’s suspension serves as a high-profile example of how this system is being enforced to uphold accountability, regardless of an individual's status or tenure in the industry.

Survivors of maltreatment in sport are encouraged to contact the Canadian Sport Helpline at 1-888-837-7678, which offers confidential support, advice, and referrals to professionals trained in dealing with abuse and harassment in sport settings.

Equestrian Canada and the Office of the Sport Integrity Commissioner continue to work together to promote athlete protection and to uphold the highest standards of conduct across the sport.
