Big Step Moonlight (1995–2025)

Big Step Moonlight, affectionately known as “Commander” and “Pupsi,” left this world on September 22, 2025, at the age of 30. His life story is one of remarkable resilience and triumph — once destined for the slaughterhouse, he instead became a champion and beloved partner. From the moment he stepped off the trailer, small in stature but wide and full of heart, he was cherished as part of the Peterka family, who quickly recognized the determination and potential behind his gentle eyes.

As a youth reiner and all-around competitor, Commander defied every doubt cast upon him. He and Daniela Peterka earned accolades including Reserve Champion at the NRHA Breeders Futurity SBH 3-Year-Old Non-Pro, PHCG Reining Futurity Champion Open, and 3rd at the NRHA Breeders Futurity Bit 4-Year-Old Non-Pro. He even held his own in the working cow horse pen, taking Reserve Champion at the APHA German Championship, where the audience cheered wildly for the little gelding with the enormous heart. Always careful, kind, and trustworthy, Commander was equally at ease carrying children or showing with grit against tough competition.

Commander's impact extended well beyond the arena. He was a steadfast companion, a teacher, and a family member who inspired laughter, pride, and trust in all who knew him. Thanks to the care of Horses Helping People CIC, he celebrated his 30th birthday earlier this year, a milestone that reflected his extraordinary life and the love surrounding him. Though his body is gone, the memories of his kindness, courage, and character will live on forever with Rolf, Monika, Daniela, and all who were privileged to share in his journey. Run free, Commander — you will always be remembered.
