Yellow Jersey (2004–2026)

A Reining Legend Remembered

The reining world has lost one of its greats. Yellow Jersey, the magnificent stallion whose career took him from his birthplace in Italy to the highest levels of international competition, passed away on November 4, 2026, at the age of 22.

For those fortunate enough to have seen him in person, Yellow Jersey was unforgettable. His striking appearance, unmistakable presence and extraordinary athleticism made him a horse who commanded attention without ever having to ask for it.

We had the privilege of meeting Yellow Jersey during his years at McQuay Stables, and he was every bit as impressive standing before us as he was under the bright lights of the show pen. There was something special about him, a quiet confidence and presence that photographs and videos could never quite capture. He was, quite simply, a magnificent horse.

A Career That Crossed Continents

Born in Italy on April 19, 2004, Yellow Jersey would go on to become one of the most recognizable stallions in the international reining community.

His journey brought him to the United States, where he became part of the renowned McQuay Stables program in Tioga, Texas. Under the guidance of legendary horseman Tim McQuay, Yellow Jersey established himself among the sport’s elite, earning recognition on some of reining’s biggest stages.

His accomplishments reflected the qualities that made him such an exceptional athlete: power, precision, willingness and the ability to deliver when it mattered most.

Yet his influence extended well beyond his own performances. As a breeding stallion, Yellow Jersey contributed to the next generation of reining horses, passing along the bloodlines and athletic qualities that had made him so remarkable.

His name became familiar to horsemen on both sides of the Atlantic, a reflection of the increasingly international nature of the sport he helped represent.

A Homecoming Worth Remembering

There is something especially poignant about the final chapter of Yellow Jersey’s life.

After years spent travelling, competing and contributing to the sport around the world, he returned to Italy, the country where his story had begun.

At Elementa, he was welcomed into retirement and given the opportunity to enjoy a quieter life, surrounded by people who appreciated him not simply for his accomplishments, but for the horse he was.

In announcing his passing, the team at Elementa reflected on the privilege of sharing this chapter of his life and the special place he held in their hearts.

Their words were a beautiful reminder that even the most celebrated horses are, first and foremost, deeply loved companions.

For a stallion whose life had taken him so far, there was something fitting about his journey coming full circle.

More Than a Name in the Record Books

Yellow Jersey’s legacy will remain part of reining history, both in North America and internationally. His accomplishments, his offspring and the memories of his performances will continue to be celebrated by the horsemen who followed his career.

But those who spent time around him will remember something else, too.

They will remember the beautiful stallion standing quietly in his stall, the unmistakable expression, the presence that made you stop and take a second look. The kind of horse you could admire from the grandstands, then appreciate even more when you had the opportunity to meet him.

We count ourselves fortunate to have had that opportunity.

Our heartfelt condolences go out to everyone at Elementa, the McQuay family and all those who played a part in Yellow Jersey’s extraordinary life.

Rest peacefully, Yellow Jersey.

From Italy to Texas and back again, you travelled a remarkable road. You gave the reining world so much to admire, and those who knew you something even more meaningful to remember.

A legend in the arena. A magnificent horse in person. And a legacy that will endure.
