Breathless In April (“April”) was the kind of mare who made people pause—soft-eyed, steady, and stamped with a pedigree that promised purpose. Sired by the legendary Huntin For Chocolate and out of Machine Dot Com (by A Good Machine), she carried the best of both lines and shared it generously.
In the show pen, April built a résumé one honest trip at a time. She earned 139 AQHA points—28 in Halter and 111 in Performance—along with three ROMs and a Superior Award. Her record reflected what she was known for by the people who rode and loved her: consistency, try, and a quiet kind of excellence.
April’s greatest work, though, was in the foaling barn. Year after year she produced the kind that make you dream — pretty, balanced, and willing. Julian Harris shared that her memory lives on in her babies, “producing multiple world champions already.” That is the truest measure of a mare: a legacy that keeps stepping into the arena long after she’s gone.
Those closest to her knew when it was time — she “let us know,” and was laid to rest beneath her favourite tree. She leaves behind grateful hearts, barn aisles full of stories, and a line of foals that carry her expression and her try. She was loved well, and she gave that love back in the only way horses know — every day, with quiet honesty.
Our deepest condolences to Julian Harris and to everyone who loved, cared for, and was impacted by April’s life. Thank you, April, for the memories, the lessons, and the foals who will keep your name alive with every stride.
