With heavy hearts, we honour the life of Cat Zahir, lovingly known as “Cupcake,” the cherished matriarch of Anderson Performance Horses in Hagersville, Ontario.
Cupcake was the kind of mare that defines a program – not only through what she accomplished, but through the steady, generous presence she brought to every day on the farm. Bred by David & Georgia Husby, she was royally made: High Brow Cat × Lenas Horn (Holidoc × Lena Badger) – a pedigree built for the work, and a mare who truly lived up to it.
In the show pen, Cupcake proved her quality, earning over $42,000 in her NCHA career. And as a producer, her influence only grew, with her offspring’s earnings exceeding $120,000+ – a lasting legacy carried forward through the horses she left behind.
But those numbers, impressive as they are, only tell part of the story.
What made Cupcake so special was who she was to live with: kind, exceptional, and a true pleasure to be around – the rare mare who makes a barn feel better simply by being in it. Anderson Performance Horses shared their gratitude for the privilege of calling her theirs, and that gratitude is easy to understand when a mare has given so much – in effort, in heart, and in the quiet moments that become the ones you miss most.
Cupcake passed peacefully on a beautiful spring day, leaving behind a farm that will feel her absence deeply – and a legacy that will remain present in her offspring and in every person who loved her.
Rest easy, sweet Cupcake. You were everything a breeder dreams of, and so much more.
