Dasha Good Reason (2019–2026)

The Quarter Horse racing community is mourning the loss of Dasha Good Reason, a promising young sire whose life and career ended far too soon. Dasha Good Reason passed away Wednesday morning at the age of seven at Rolling A Ranch in Atascadero, California, with the ranch awaiting the results of a necropsy to determine the cause.

Impeccably bred and unmistakably talented, Dasha Good Reason was a son of Good Reason SA and out of the exceptional broodmare Dasha Freda, an AQHA Racing Dam of Distinction by Mr Jess Perry. From the very beginning, he carried the kind of pedigree that doesn’t just suggest potential — it demands attention. His dam’s produce record alone speaks to that rare genetic stamp, including Heza Dasha Fire (2015 AQHA World Champion) and Ima Fearless Hero (AQHA Champion 2-year-old gelding), among other standouts.

On the track, Dasha Good Reason proved he belonged with the best at Los Alamitos, building a record marked by early brilliance and repeated appearances in major finals. Over 21 lifetime starts, he earned four wins and finished in the top three nine times, compiling approximately $264,000 in career earnings. As a 2-year-old, he was one of the headliners at Los Alamitos in 2021, winning four times and qualifying for some of the sport’s most prestigious events — including the Grade 1 Los Alamitos Two Million Futurity, the Grade 2 PCQHRA Breeders Futurity, and the John Deere Los Alamitos Juvenile Challenge. He went on to qualify for additional top-level stakes as he matured, including the Grade 1 Los Alamitos Super Derby and the Grade 1 Brad McKinzie Los Alamitos Winter Championship, establishing himself as a consistent, class-worthy competitor in elite company.

In February 2025, the late Ed Allred purchased Dasha Good Reason, bringing him to Rolling A Ranch with well-earned excitement for what he could mean to the future of California’s breeding program. Though his time at stud was heartbreakingly short, he was already beginning to make his mark: his first breeding season took place in 2024, and those first foals are now yearlings. His early book at Rolling A Ranch reflected just how much faith breeders had in him — a stallion with momentum, a future, and a growing group of believers.

But beyond the numbers, the finals, and the bloodlines, those who handled him remember something just as important: his character.

Dasha Good Reason was described as a true gentleman — well-mannered, quiet, focused, and a stallion without vices. The kind you trust. The kind you enjoy being around. The kind that makes the barn better simply by being in it.

To lose a stallion this early, when so much promise still lay ahead, is devastating — not only for Rolling A Ranch, but for the owners, breeders, and horsemen who were invested in what Dasha Good Reason was becoming. He leaves behind a legacy measured not only in what he accomplished, but in the foals now on the ground and the ones still to come — carrying forward the brilliance of his lineage and the hope that followed him everywhere he went.

Rest easy, Dasha Good Reason.
Gone far too soon — but remembered with immense respect, and genuine gratitude.
