With heavy hearts, we share our condolences to Devils Crown Quarter Horses on the loss of their beloved mare, “Maggie,” who passed on March 10 – just days after the heartbreaking loss of her foal. To lose both so close together is the kind of pain only breeders truly understand, and our thoughts are with everyone who loved and cared for her.
Maggie was a home-raised mare in every sense of the word – known, loved, and built from the beginning. Sired by Smooth Cool N Frosty and out of Shappas Silk, she carried a pedigree that mattered, and she wore it with the kind of presence you don’t forget. She was also a full sister to A Cool Roan Mister, and to A Cool Roan With Chrome, a multiple European National Champion raised by Devils Crown and sold to Austria as a yearling.
But Maggie’s story was never only about bloodlines — it was about grit.
She was a survivor from the start. After her dam battled placentitis, Maggie arrived nearly a month early, and with care in those early days, she grew, strengthened, and flourished into a solid, beautiful mare. She went on to be started under saddle at five and did well, proving she had both a willing mind and a good foundation – before stepping into her role as a broodmare.
Her first foal arrived in 2021, and though he was lost at only a couple of days old, he was remembered as spectacular – the kind of baby that makes you hopeful for everything still to come. Maggie did go on to leave her mark through her later foals: a standout palomino stud colt in 2022 by Skip The Kissin, followed by a sorrel stud colt by Ashwoods Classic Ice in 2023, and a red dun stud colt in 2024. The foal she lost this year was sired by Devils Coal Train.
Maggie was only 13, and for Devils Crown, she was especially precious: the only filly her dam ever gave them, a mare they raised and believed in, and one whose line meant something. Her passing, and the loss of her foal just before, is a reminder of how quickly breeding dreams can turn into grief — and how deeply these horses become part of our hearts.
Rest easy, Maggie.
You were loved from your first breath, and you will be missed beyond measure. 🤍
