As Good As Nick Gets (1999–2026)

With heavy hearts, we honour the life of As Good As Nick Gets, lovingly known as “Nick” – a remarkable stallion whose influence on the barrel racing industry will be felt for generations.

Nick was humanely euthanized on May 13 due to medical complications, at the age of 27. In the care of his devoted owners, Billy and Suzonne Franks, he was loved, respected, and valued not only for what he achieved, but for the legacy he built.

A 1999 sorrel AQHA/APHA stallion standing 15.1h, Nick was bred Dr Nick Bar × Mystical Avenger (Staunch Avenger) – and he proved that pedigree and performance could meet in one unforgettable horse. In his own barrel racing career, Nick earned over $100,000, leaving his mark in the arena with talent, grit, and heart.

But the legacy that secured his place in the sport’s history was what came after.

Nick became a Million Dollar Sire, producing offspring with earnings nearing $1.5 million to date – a reflection of the quality, ability, and try he consistently passed on. For breeders and competitors alike, “Nick” wasn’t just a name on paper. He was a proven influence, a program builder, and a stallion whose impact showed up wherever his progeny ran.

To Billy and Suzonne Franks, and to every rider, owner, and breeder who believed in Nick and the horses he left behind, we extend our deepest condolences.

Rest easy, Nick. Your run isn’t over – it lives on in every horse who carries your name forward. 🤍
