JAF Pepsis Promise, lovingly known as “Promise,” was laid to rest on June 2, 2026, and the weight of that goodbye is being felt deeply across Fleetwood Farms Quarter Horses.
In a message shared by her breeder and owner, the day began like any other ranch morning, and then unraveled into one of the hardest days a breeder can face. A brutal stretch of cold, wind, and driving rain had already pushed the entire team into overdrive, cycling mares and young foals through the barn to keep them warm and dry. When the call came that a young colt was failing, the crew moved fast, doing everything they could to warm him, comfort him, and give him a chance. Despite their best efforts, he slipped away. And while that loss was still unfolding in the barn, Promise – one of the breeder’s favourites – was quietly fighting her own battle as labour began.
Promise wasn’t just another mare in the pasture. She was a daughter of Pepsi Max, a horse whose influence and memory have remained at the heart of the program for years. Promise was born after her sire passed, and from the very start she carried the kind of meaning that makes a breeder hold on tighter. Her owner shared that she promised Promise would never live anywhere else – and that promise became her name.
That bond made what came next even harder.
After Promise began showing signs of serious distress during foaling, she was hauled for veterinary evaluation and found to be suffering from a uterine torsion – an emergency with heartbreaking odds, especially for an older mare. Faced with the reality of a likely lost foal and a painful, uncertain outcome for Promise, her owner made the compassionate decision no one ever wants to make: to let her go peacefully, sparing her further suffering.
It was the kind of day that reminds everyone in this industry that the story isn’t always wins and newborn photos. Sometimes it’s the long hours, the impossible choices, and the grief that sits in your chest while you still have to keep walking back out to the barn for the next mare who needs you.
Promise’s passing is a loss not only of a beloved mare, but of a piece of a program’s history – one built on heart horses, hard work, and the kind of devotion that doesn’t end just because a life does.
From all of us at StallionCompare, we extend our sincerest condolences to Fleetwood Farms Quarter Horses and their entire team, including the crew who stood in the storm and in the barn that day. Rest in peace, JAF Pepsis Promise (2007–2026). Your name will always mean what it was meant to mean: love kept, and a promise honoured. 🤍
