With heavy hearts, we extend our deepest condolences to Brittany Lehman-Cooper on the loss of her beloved mare, Kan U Keep A Sekret, and her foal – a heartbreaking goodbye that came far too suddenly.
Brittany had this lovely mare since she was a two-year-old – one of the original mares who helped shape the foundation of her breeding program. Over the years, Sekret proved, again and again, what kind of mare she was: tough, willing, and deeply devoted. Even after a serious ankle injury early in her life – one that required casting and careful management – Sekret went on to do what she loved most. She became a mother.
Brittany shared that she carried more than ten foals, and that she wasn’t just good at it – she thrived in it. She loved being a mom, and she would care for any baby placed near her with the kind of steady, generous instinct that makes a broodmare truly irreplaceable.
On the morning of her passing, she went down, and Brittany and her veterinarian fought hard for both mare and foal. Faced with a difficult foaling complication and no real chance of saving either, Brittany made the compassionate choice no breeder ever wants to make – choosing peace over suffering, and love over waiting.
This lovely mare leaves behind a legacy measured in far more than numbers. It’s in the foals she raised, the years she gave, and the quiet way she held her place in Brittany’s life – not just as a broodmare, but as family.
Rest in peace, sweet mare.
May you and your baby be running free – and may Brittany always feel just how much you were loved. 🤍
