“So smooth, so electric, he made it look too easy.”
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Ricato Suave, a once-in-a-generation athlete and truly remarkable stallion. Bred from greatness, by Metallic Cat and out of Hip Hip Sue Rey, Rico was destined to make an impact — and he did, with elegance, grit, and a heart full of try.
With over $275,697 in lifetime earnings, Ricato Suave was more than a competitor. His effortless style, sharp mind, and magnetic presence made him unforgettable. He inspired riders, trainers, and fans alike, winning over hearts as much as he won in the pen. He gave everything he had each time he stepped into the arena, and in doing so, became a horse we will always remember.
To his beloved owner, Shaleah Hester, Rico was more than a champion — he was the fulfillment of her wildest dreams. Alongside trainer Clay Volmer, he poured his heart into every ride, becoming a true partner and leaving an indelible mark on all who knew him. His promising offspring are already carrying forward his talent and grace, ensuring that his legacy lives on.
Yet, in a devastating reminder of how fleeting greatness can be, Rico’s time as a sire has been cut tragically short. Because of AQHA Rules REG111.6 and REG112.9, foals by Ricato Suave can only be registered during the 2026 and 2027 breeding seasons. To think that his stallion career — so full of potential — is limited to just these years makes his loss all the more profound.
With a limited supply of frozen semen, Ricato Suave will be available via ICSI contracts through Oswood Stallion Station, giving breeders the rare chance to bring his legacy into the future. Though his breeding career is shortened, the foals he leaves behind will be treasured, carrying forward the brilliance of a stallion gone far too soon.
Rico’s time with us was heartbreakingly brief, but the impact he leaves is permanent. He was — and will always be — the kind of horse we dream of, and so rarely see.
Our deepest sympathies go out to Shaleah Hester, Madeleine Fountain, Clay Volmer, Veronica Swales, and everyone who loved Rico. The horse world has lost a bright light, but his memory and influence will never fade.
