Sheza Passing Breeze (2002–2026)

Earlier this afternoon, those closest to truly special mare had to make the hardest choice we face as horse owners, they had to say goodbye — Sheza Passing Breeze, lovingly known as “Breezy.” Foaled March 22, 2002 in Georgia, Breezy was a beautiful bay mare whose name suited her perfectly: a quiet kind of presence that moved through a barn like a warm wind.

Breezy was bred by Breedlove Farms (Covington, Georgia) and carried a pedigree built on proven performance, being sired by A Passing Breeze and out of Locked And Loaded (Tuesdays Gold). But as anyone who has loved a great mare knows, bloodlines only tell part of the story. The rest is written in the day-to-day: in the way they nicker when they hear your footsteps, the way they lower their head into your chest, the way they hold steady when life doesn’t.

For Taylor Thayer Bates, that story began three years ago — and even in that relatively short time, Breezy became the kind of once-in-a-lifetime mare who leaves her mark on everything she touches. Taylor shared that Breezy had her own inner circle, too: her best friends One Special Version “Porsche” and RL Bay Feather “Feather.” If you’ve spent enough time in a mare barn, you know those friendships are real — the quiet standing together, the mutual calm, the unspoken loyalty. Breezy wasn’t just loved by her people; she was cherished by her herd.

Mares like Breezy don’t simply leave memories — they leave legacies. And Breezy’s legacy is already stamped into the show pen through the success of her produce.

Among her most celebrated foals:

  • Creepin Pass Me — an NSBA World Champion, sired by Justa Creepin (a testament to Breezy’s ability to produce at the very highest level).

  • Sheza Slow Breeze — a Congress Champion, sired by Zippos Shadow Watch.

Her AQHA produce record reflects the depth of her influence, including multiple foals and performers to her name. And even as we mourn her, Breezy’s story is still unfolding.

Taylor shared that Breezy has:

  • An embryo in a recipient mare due March 13 by Hall of Fame Scenic Impulse

  • Pending exciting RL Best of Sudden ICSI embryo results

In a way only a great broodmare can manage, Breezy leaves behind not only what she was, but what she was still building. The future she carried forward will now be held especially close — equal parts hope and heartbreak — the continuation of a mare who gave so much.

It’s easy for the industry to measure greatness in titles, earnings, and points — but the heart of a mare like Breezy was never going to fit neatly onto a page.

Great mares teach us what excellence looks like when it’s quiet.
When it’s patient.
When it’s steady.
When it shows up every day, no matter what the season brings.

Breezy’s life reminds us that broodmares are more than mothers — they are the foundation. They are the beginning of stories that extend far beyond themselves. They are the keepers of lineage, the shapers of careers, the ones who give the world “the next one.”

And for the people lucky enough to have loved them, they are family.

To Taylor Thayer Bates, and to everyone who loved Breezy, we extend our deepest condolences. In every foal she produced, in every friend she stood beside, and in every moment she gave to the people who cared for her, Breezy leaves behind something lasting.

Run free, sweet Breezy.
A passing breeze — but never a passing love.
